These boards just found their way to New Evolution Surf Shop in Japan. Both the Evo Disc and the Evo Speed Disc have opaque decks with tinted bottom and come with hand foiled wood thrusters. The pair are a couple of my favorite models, check them out.

Heres are a couple of shots of a 7' something Evo Disc. Much like its previously featured shorter counterpart this board makes for a great all a round piece of equipment. It can be made with any fin configuration, however I prefer the glass on wood thruster.

I am very excited to have the opportunity to expand my egg building quiver. This has been one of my more popular models the Evo Disc. Double Ender

Lately I have been very fortunate to be able to do some experimentation with mid-length surfboards. This a spin on my "double ender", however instead of the round pin I was able to go with a pin tail. This particular board is 8'8 x 22 1/2 x 2 3/4 with a single to double concave that transitions to V off the tail. I prefer riding these boards in any wave from waist high to just over head. Truly a perfect all around board.

Arc Tail Pig

One of many pig variations the arc tail allows for the best of both worlds. This particular board has a wider nose than most and makes for a great nose rider. The custom D is a firm anchor that generates speed and stability off the nose.

Skegg

As usual I finish this mid-length egg a few weeks ago. Of all my egg models this particular template (Skegg) is my favorite. Influenced largely by Skip's eggs this egg outline has a more directed nose that incorporates a bit of ear in the front third of the template. The board features a rolled bottom rail, a moderate rock and plenty of volume. The bottom is set up with a single to double concave that transitions into V out the tail. Over all this board is equipped to handle whatever is thrown its way.

Finished this threesome a few weeks back. All three are currently being put to the test on some worthy southern California north west swells. From left to right the first board is a 5'10 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 single fin short board stinger. The second is a 5'10 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 double bump swallow tail with a quad fin set up. And last but not least a 5'10 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 with a traditional 80's style outline equipped with a classic hip and thruster set up. Diamond Tail Nose Ridder

The featured board is my diamond tail nose ridder. Standard dimensions are 9'8 x 23 x 3 with a long blended nose concave that transitions into belly and V. These boards come with turned up noses and tails that are complimented by a medium 50/50 rail. The diamond tail is the perfect compromise between a round pin and a square tail. The end result a high volume tail that turns on a dime.

Part of a demo series I recently build this little diamond tail seemed to capture the most attention. At 5'10 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 this full out line short board provides plenty of volume without sacrificing performance. Ideally this board is designed to be an every day ridder. The wider nose and tail can accommodate all types of waves and by changing the tail shape the design can be dialed in to fit a specific purpose. Speed Disc

An adaptation of the egg, the speed disc bridges the gap between the full egg outline and the short board. Standard dimensions are 5'8 x 19 3/4 x 2 3/8. This model can shaped with a retro egg rail or with a progressive short board style rail. The featured board has a single to double concave and is directed by a set of quad fins. Evo Disc

The next few post will be highlighting a few of the short board oriented shapes that have been feeding my stoke. All of these shapes are strongly influenced by the modern short board rail and feature progressive concaves with moderate rockers. This first shape is the Evo Disc. The out line is heavily influenced by the Evolution of the Sea style eggs that where primarily responsible for transitioning surfing into the short board of the 70's. A true double ender this board excels in all conditions from waist high to a couple of feet over head. The board featured is 5'8 x 20 x 2 3/8 and is available in multiple dimensions to serve any purpose.

This Arc tail pig was finished a week ago and is headed for New Evolution Surf Shop in Japan. The board features an arced tail that works together with the timeless hips of a pig to make for one smooth turning single fin. This particular pig has a strict nose concave supported by a traditional rolled belly all steered by a hand foiled wood D fin.

Dial it In

The featured board is one I completed a couple weeks back for Garrett. If you pay much attention to the post you'll see his name for photo credit at the end of nearly every one. This particular egg was a bit of a twist on the standard dimensions with a thumb tail design. Garrett's board is 7'4 x 21 1/2 x 2 3/4, it has a mellow triple concave that fades into V off of the tail. Accompany that with its ultra foiled profile and a set of hand foiled fins the end result is one dialed egg.

Middle Ground

Often time customers will head into the shop with a specific board in mind. Others will explain what they would like the board to do. When broaching the subject of longboards time and time again I find myself explaining differences in tails and their benefits. Of late I have been suggesting customers who are unsure of what they want find a middle ground and go with a diamond tail. The above featured board is exactly that. At 9'8 x 23 1/2 x 3 1/8 this board has all of the makings of a focused nose ridder. Unlike most it's square tailed counter parts this board embraces the best of both the pin tails and square tails.

Simply Clean

Every now and again I get the urge to keep one of the boards I am working on for myself, this is a perfect example. Above is my all around nose rider at 9'8 x 23 x 18 7/8 x 16 1/2 x 3 its what I have found to get me the best results and rely on as the work horse of sumer. This board was made for a local guy who knows some of the best looking boards are the simple clean ones. His nose rider was glassed with a classic weight volan, a knee patch and a single pin line. It featured a lower volume 50/50 rail, which was complemented with a sleek foil and just the right amount of nose rocker.

This summer has been a blast, I have been growing relationships with quality people left and right. The above featured board was made for someone of the utmost quality. The round pin nose rider is the perfect board for the surfer looking to log some tip time without sacrificing mobility. The bottom is set up with a long single concave through the nose that transitions into rolled belly then panel V. The 2+1 is another feature that allows this board to be ridden in various wave conditions without being tethered to the abilities of a single fin. Don't get me wrong one fin is plenty for me, its just not everyones cup of tea. This one is going to reside in San Diego so if you see it around make sure you check it out.

11' Super Glide

This summer has been unlike any I have experienced in the past. I traveled a majority of the month of August only to return long enough to work non-stop until my next get away. I'll be making my last and final trip of the summer to the Shell Beach area. I will be in town for the first half of this week and will have plenty of demo material for anyone to check out. I am also looking forward to meeting with a hand full of good people along the way. Needless to say this is my return to blogging and will resume regular posts. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in checking out any of my boards or just to shoot the breeze.

The above featured board was built for a swamis frequenter and is what I consider to be the best way to beat the doldrums of small summer swell. This particular board is 11' x 22 3/4 x 3 1/8 with a single to spiral v. Its also equipped with a 2+1 for those who are not of the single fin school. The rail design is a relaxed down rail that flows from a soft nose to a crisp edge just in front of the fins. The rocker is also relaxed with just the right amount of tail kick to execute long drawn out turns with out sacrificing trim speed.

Perfect Timing

Every year for the past three years I have donated a shaped blank to the La Jolla Shores Surfing Associations "Menehune Contest". In fact this year I donated a brand new custom shape. The winner of was truly a rad guy and couldn't have been a better recipient. Above is the result of his donation to the auction and his timing for this 10' glider couldn't have been any better.

This is the first prototype of a series of short boards that I will be working on for fall/winter 2011. The board featured is 5'10 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 with a slight single concave. A flatter, wider, and slightly thicker version of most short boards. This board bridges the gap for the retro enthusiast looking to ride a standard short board while still giving the avid short boarder something to ride on those smaller days where extra volume is essential. GB in LA

Here are a couple of shots of a GB that I finish back in June. This board ended up in LA county with a rad customer named Paolo who was a pleasure to work with. This board features a shallow nose concave that flows into a full belly. The end result is a board that will pocket nose ride insane without disturbing trim speed. Dropped this Round Pin Log off at Aloha Sunday a little while back. This particular board is 9'6 x 22 1/2 x 2 7/8 with a tight nose concave and plenty of roll. The medium rocker profile of this board allows it to excel in everything from small summer swell to head high conditions. Retro Thruster

Here are a couple of shots from one of my favorite outlines. This particular egg is 6'2 x 20 1/2 x 2 1/2 with a single concave and hand foiled wood fins. This board excels in waves from waist high to a couple feet over head and is a perfect everyday ridder. Its outline was influenced from the eggs of decades past with a more modern rail line, foil, and rocker. I like to think that its the perfect compromise of egg and short board ingenuity. This past weekend was Mike Black's "pig roast" at San-O. It was a gathering of a few board builders and many pig/surfing enthusiast. I was fortunate enough to be able to get out of the shop for a day and head up there with Garrett Highhouse and Creative Buck. The boys from Aloha Sunday also had someone holding down there shop and accompanied us up. We had fun waves and great weather. I also brought a couple new models up there for demo, so stay tuned for pictures of those.

Its been a while but I finally made it to post one hundred. Its been a struggle not to compromise the posts with filler material. Rather than bore you with unrelated material, I waited until I had worth while posts that are intended to be informative and entertaining. Special thanks to Garrett for all of the great photos, layouts and behind the scene influence. For all of those who check the blog on a regular basis thank you.

On to the real post. The above featured board is what I consider to be the perfect log. This particular board is 9'9 x 23 1/2 x 2 7/8 x 19 x 16 with a single fin box. Its built off of a mild nose rocker with just enough tail rocker to execute effortless turns with out compromising water flow. The bottom is set up with a long blended concave that extends just past the midpoint, at which point it transitions to a slight flat section to, a relaxed belly to rolled v in front of the fin box. The rails are turned up both in the nose and tail and are adjoined by a classic 50/50. To top this one off I threw a amberish tint top and bottom and then complimented it with some fancy panel work done by Larry Crow. This board is available for sale at Aloha Sunday in North Park on university and 31 st. The boys are really making an effort to move boards and this one can be snagged for around 850.00.

New Egg

Its that time of year. The water should be warming the south swells start running and the equipment starts to change. In order with the change in season I made this 6'4 x 21 x 2 1/2 70's inspired egg. This particular board has a relaxed nose rocker, a slight single concave and plenty of volume to float you threw the dog days of summer. The hand foiled thruster set up in concession with a modern short board inspired rail allow this board to excel in surf from waist high to over head. 11' Glider

Looking forward to those small summer swells and so are the customers. I am starting to generate quite a few orders for surf craft 10' and beyond. This board was finished for a regular customer who was looking to step it up for summer. This particular glider is 11' 1 x 23 x 3 1/4 and features a shallow single concave that flows into a classic glider tail equipped with a suitable amount of v and just the right amount of double concave. These boards work well with a wide range of fin set ups and are available in single to quad and everything in between.

Putting it to Work

I had a great opportunity to build a board for both a talented surfer and creative. Scott plays a key role in running the creative side of things at the well known branding agency, MiresBall. Garrett and I had the privilege of dropping the board off at Scott's office, which is a direct reflection of the product they produce. It has the perfect balance between function and fashion. The board featured is a version of the Peace Maker. The model is what I consider to be a tear drop style gun/retro single fin. This particular board was altered from the original version. In changing the original templet from the wide point through the tail, I was able to create a board that would accommodate a wider verity of surf. However where it excels is illustrated by the photo. The photo lay out was an original creation by Garrett, which is often replicated but never duplicated.

Dipped Pig

This pig was finished a few weeks back for a cool customer named Vic. This particular pig is a hybrid of sorts. It features an increased rocker profile, a deep strict nose concave and a blended 50/50 rail that is turned up in both the nose and the tail. Vic's board also has a one of a kind hand foiled volan fin. One that was foiled 100% by hand and came from a panel that was made by yours truly. Finished this 5'10 over a month ago. Since then it has been making the rounds at various fundraisers and finally found a temporary home at Aloha Sunday on university and 31 st. Summer Glider

I finished this glider about a month ago for Bill Sager. Its a combination glider, arc tail. The bottom contours are similar to those of a glider with a relaxed rail and flat rock. At 9'2 this particular board doesn't quite have the float of its larger counter parts, thus the added tail volume. The combination results in all out trim speed which can be directed by either a single fin or 2+1. This board can be made in many different size variations and is a real treat for summer.

Dropped this 9'9 Nose Ridder off at Surf Indian in Pacific Beach last weekend. This particular board is 9'9 x 23 1/2 x 19 x 16 1/4 x 3. With a deep blended nose concave that runs just past the mid point you should no problem logging plenty of tip time. A perfect board for those long summer days.

This quad-simmons left the shop a few weeks backs. It's going to a regular customer who was looking to go shorter with out giving up volume. These boards are extremely fast and paddle great. Perfect for those days when all the conditions aren't quite right.

Reemerged

After a year and a half of being passed around, stripped and stored. This 9'8 reemerged from storage to find itself in the possession of a new owner. A few weeks back I had quite a few conversations with the new owner Anthony and his son Joaquin. They headed down to the shop from the greater Los Angeles and picked it up. After briefly following up with Anthony, it seems as though the boys are happy with there newly acquired stick.

Handicap

Over the course of this last winter I contracted the itch to ride standard short board. By standard I mean 6'1 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 10 3/4 x 14 ish with a thruster fin set up. This board is my handicap to aid in achieving that goal. The board featured is 6'2 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 14, overall it been an extremely fun board. Having bumped up the number just a bit I was able gain tremendous paddle power as well as float to help transition my heavy footed stance. This board like all of my personal boards are available for demo.

This 7' footer left the shop walls last week to embark on some pretty fun surf over the weekend. This particular board is oriented for for those softer days when a little extra volume is needed. However the two plus one set up and the pulled in round pin allows you to make the best of those fast sections and execute drawn out cutbacks.

New Single Fin

I was really excited to finish this new personal board, unfortunately i picked up a few stitches yesterday and wont be able to ride it for a while. I call this model the "Peace Maker" and a single fin is one of many variations that are possible with this design. This particular board is 7'2 x 19 5/8x 2 11/16, with the wide point forward and a subtle single concave the that flows into a deeper double with V off the tail. The board in the picture is also available for demo, so if your on the fence or just want to try something new feel free to give me a call and swing by the shop. Also special thanks to Garrett for getting all of the photos into print quality. Anytime you see a photo layout or just nice photos in general Garrett is the guy responsible for that. Lined Quad

For those days when you really want to step it up. I finished this personal board for myself a few weeks back and have only had a hand full of opportunities to ride it. One thing is inherently clear is that this board flies. At 6'1 x 19 x 2 7/16 with a larger nose and tail than your standard short board. This swallow tail is the perfect board for any surfer looking for a short under his feet and volume under your chest. This one is a demo, so if it interests you let me know. Also this sand finish isn't so typical with a bit of abstract color top and bottom.

For those of you who don't live in San Diego Wyatt Potts is the main man at Surf Indian in Pacific Beach. I recently built him this 9' x 21 x 2 5/8 for a trip he took to Hawaii a couple weeks back. Fortunately Wyatt scored non-stop surf his entire trip and this board was tested in waves with consequence. I am still waiting for some action footage but these stills should hold you over.

Fashioned this RPP about a month ago for good customer of mine named Scott. This board is an enhanced version of a mid-60's Hobbie production pig. Its a perfect compromise of a traditional 60's surfboard with all of the modern amenities that we have all grown to enjoy.

I built this little egg especially for Blacks Beach in San Diego. By moving the wide point forward I was able to create an eccentric tear drop shape that is perfect for shaving speed and pulling in. Follow Up

As the title suggest here are a couple of shots that are a follow up to the last post. This classic keel is 5'9 x 20 3/4 x 2 7/16. It has a small amount of added nose rocker and a pair of hand foiled keel fins. It currently resides in the shop racks, but will soon find a new home at New Evolution Surf Shop, Japan.

This little custom just rolled out the doors last week, for a regular customer named Ben. This particular template makes for a great all around longboard. At 9'6''x23 3/8x 3 there's plenty of float and just enough curve to nose ride and turn, all in the same board.

As always summer's end is nearing, the days begin to shorten and the water cools. Looking into the immediate future we are faced with possibly one of the last large south swells, and it appears as though I put the finishing touches on this 6'10 just in time.

Just put the finishing touches on this new 9'8'' over the weekend. This was a custom for Greg Hoffman and he should have no problem working that space between the band and the tip.

Simm's New Simmons Inspired

Finished this tri-plan hull a couple of weeks ago for my long time friend Chris. I also had the privilege of watching him put it to the test in the last round of south swell. The low rocker, tri-plan bottom and four hand crafted wood fins are just a few attributes that make this board insanely fast.

Green Machine

Like its predecessor this green fish is a speed machine. At the head of all its speed are two neatly single foiled flex rake fins. At just 1/4 of an inch thick these flexible fins result in unmatched performance.

Finished this curvy fish last week. It weighed out under 7 lbs, with glass on flex keels, and a gloss and polish.

A few weeks ago I posted a some shots of Pete's newly shaped displacement hull. Like all the boards you see on this blog, each and everyone is hand shaped, features my hand foiled fins and is personally glassed by myself. Pete's new stubby is no different, here are a few more shots post gloss and polish.

Little General

Today for your viewing pleasure is a creation that I have been working on for quite some time. Inspired by the work of Hydrodynamica this tri-plan hull is something special. Standing at 5'8 x 22 x 2 5/8 this single bump quad is an experience. Flotation, speed and rail to rail turning are just a few of its finer points. This excellently functioning surfboard with it's one off art by Bill Sager, results in a truly unique piece.

Straight to the Finals

As many of you know last weekend was the Pacific Beach Summer Classic. For those who didn't, now you do. I had a strong showing of young rippers supporting the brand. Both Tristan and Ryan made it to the finals in less than perfect conditions. Here's a shot of Ryan casually perched in a region of the board that is all to familiar.

Summertime Fish

Now that the rain is gone and sun is out, its time to shift our focus towards the warm days of summer. In an attempt to glean as much enjoyment from summer swell, surfers are transitioning from their boards of winter to full volume and flatter rockers. This particular summertime slider is a favorite of mine and is something that will enhance your quiver year round.

Laminates

Over the years of building complete surfboards you pick up numerous bits of knowledge that most people wouldn't consider to be a part of the building process, i.e. laminates. When differentiating between surfboards few shapers have been able to separate themselves purely based on their one of a kind creations. If not separated by concept one aspect is left to separate your board ascetically from the rest, the logo. Since all aspects of the building process interests me why not include laminates. Here are a some shots of freshly screened laminates. Many are printed but few make the grade.

Pistol Pete's Plaining Hull

Over the years I have encountered a good deal of customers who have remained very loyal to the Josh Oldenburg brand. However one stands out from the rest, both in quantity and quality of surfer. Pete more notably known as "Pistol Pete" has been riding my boards from before they even resembled surfboards. Over the years he and I have collaborated on many saucer like creations and this one is right up there with the best of them. Pete's new planing hull is 5'6'' x 20 3/4 x 2 5/8, it features a strong hull bottom belly from entry and transitions in to a mellow V just in front of the tail. The rails are neutral and transition to down rail in order to work in concession with a set of shark tooth side bites and a 4a. Unlike many hulls Pete's has a bit of beach break rocker which will give him some wiggle room at his local spot.

I finished this one yesterday for a young artist named Neil. He received a 9'9 x 23 x 18 3/4 x 16 1/2 x 3 classic square tail with a 10 1/2'' glass on. The tint was truly one of kind, no out of the can color on this one.

Breaking It In

A few months ago I posted some photos of a board I had just finished titled "Freshly Dipped". Well its been a couple of months and the young surfer who traded his mom car washes for the extra money to get it is breaking it in just fine. Jake's rides his dimensions at 9'4 x 23 x 18 3/4 x 16 1/4 x 3, looks like there working well.

Pig Hybrid

No this hybrid will not get you better mpg's, but it will allow you to trim faster and nose ride farther. At 9'10 x 23 x 16 7/8 nose x 16 1/2 tail x 3 this particular pig's dimensions are a little larger and wider than most. However its straight rail line from the nose to is exceeding large hips maintain that classic pig outline. Dimensions are not the only element that separate this board from those classic pigs of years past. Unlike many traditionally based pigs this one has a progressive nose rider rocker further increasing elements of modern longboards with those of the past. The bottom contours are very reminiscent of a classic pig, with just the right amount of concave to belly to rolled V this board is one serious trim machine. All of these elements combined with a signature D-style Josh Oldenburg fin make it a good choice for a summer cruiser.

Summertime Quiver

Finished these a couple of weeks ago. The foam wedge stringer is my classic nose-rider, at 9'8 x 23 x 18 3/4 x 17 x 3 it makes for some seriously stable tip control. The triple stringer is a new template that pushes the wide point back and slims the nose and tail, but still retains some hips. This board is what I consider to be the link between a retro pig and a modern log. It stands at 9'9 x 22 1/2 x 17 1/4 x 15 3/4 x 3 1/8. The bottom contours are reminiscent of an era gone by with a minimal nose concave to flat to belly to rolled V near the tail and flat exiting the tail. Both boards have flat rockers and are tremendously quick down the line. The photos were taken by Garrett Highhouse with art work done by Bill Sager.

A young surfer named Ryan Luna picked this one up on Wednesday. This template is the full nose-rider, the dimensions are 9'4 x 23 1/2 x 19 1/2 x 16 1/2 x 2 7/8. His color scheme is one that demands attention. With that lime green bottom and rail you'll have no excuses for not seeing him coming down the line.

Summer Time Pig

Finished this one last week. Garrett snapped a few photos over the weekend and now its here for your viewing pleasure. This particular board is the identical outline of a early-mid 60's Hobie. Its 9'4 x 22 x 16.5 x 15.5 x 3 1/4 with a flat rocker and volume out to the rails. The bottom features a modern nose concave that flows into a belly and carries a rolled V out the tail, with one of a kind art work by Bill Sager. Fins are In

After a long wait and countless hours of toying with curves, the 2010 Josh Oldenburg signature fins are now available. The first is an all round nose-riding fin. This fin features a wide base for stability off the nose and good deal of rake for flowing cutbacks. The second fin is a blast from the past. This barn door style fin was influenced by a 1963 Hobie stock fin. In order to get a bit more performance out of the fin I reduced the base, greatened the height and added a bit of curve. The components together allow for an ascetically old school fin with modern performance. Both fins are available for purchase and come in a wide range of colors. For those of you who don't know William Sager is creative buck behind the new look of Josh Oldenburg Surfboards. His brain child is laid out with precision on the large yellow glider feature below. William conjured the idea of creating depth thew a series of medias. The end result is a truly one of a kind product. Take a look you won't be disappointed.

Long Awaited Return

In honor of my return to the blogging community I present the first of a summertime slide series. This particular pintail is 10'2 x 23 x 3 3/8 with a long double concave and V out the tail. A couple paddles and your gliding into waves, making sections you never thought possible. Check it out and keep in touch for a whole slue of new postings.

Christian's Cliffs Carver

If going top to bottom, carving turns and long drawn out cut backs are you thing this board is for you. At 7'4 x 21 1/2 x 2 7/8 this pointed 2+1 is built for speed. The full body and straight lines of this particular board aid in projection down the line with tremendous speed.

This little beauty is headed east, as in Europe. At 9'2'' x 23 x 19 x 16 1/2 x 3 1/8 this compact nose-rider is going to find a new home in the cold waters of Belgium and the surrounding waves of that region.

Here a couple of shots of Brett Hoffman's new nose-ridder. This particular board is 9'3'' x 23 x 18 3/4 x 16 1/4 x 2 7/8. Brett and his new sled are currently off in Mexico putting this neatly dipped nose-ridder through the processes.

Green Spots

This new outline is a compilation of a few different templates that translated into 5'9 x 20 1/2 x 2 1/2. This curvy fish outline has a deep double barrel concave that channels all of its energy towards two hand crafted single foil rake fins. Unlike the classic fish which focusses on a straight outline towards the tail this board has a good deal of curve from the wide point back to its tips set at 10 1/4. These components combined resulted in a board that drives and slides all on command.

Freshly Dipped

Here are a few shots of a brand new pintail for Jake Willis. This board is 9'4'' x 23 x 3 x 18 3/4 x 16 1/4, with 50/50 rails turned up in the nose and tail. It also features a long blended concave that transitions into belly and then into V out the tail. The flat rocker allows this board to become the trim monster it was intended to be.

Super Simmons

Below is a classic simmons inspired shape. This particular board is 6'4'' x 24 1/4 x 3''. Its large numbers are suited for the surfer who can muscle this beast of a board. It also has a hand drawn piece on the bottom by yours truly, signifying the influence of its owners. The dimensions by Jared Weisser and shape and glass work by Josh Oldenburg, summarized by "old & wise".
